KYLE HARRIS of Liberty
Movies shoots the first third of his
experimental narrative feature "The Patriarchs"
Aug. 7-25. The first section follows a romance
between an older gay activist and a young
anarchist punk. "I'm interested in the
intergenerational conflicts and desires between
the previous, 'ACT UP generation' that's lived
through AIDS, and the younger queer generation
working on anti-capitalist struggles," said
Harris, who teaches film and video at Columbia
College and through the After School Matters
program.
Harris plans to screen footage from the first
section at a multimedia fundraiser, then shoot
the second section, loosely based on Plato's
Symposium, in winter, and the third section,
documenting a series of "aestheticized political
actions" in the spring. Harris is financing the
shoestring budget for the first section out-
of-pocket; he aims to raise $100,000 to complete
the film, intended for a small theatrical
release. Production designer is Justin Lieb.
Music by Telecine and Chris Bravo.
In spring 2005 Harris plans to launch "Excess
and Anarchy," his second tour of his short
films, at micro cinemas, galleries and
universities on the East Coast and in Europe.
